SFMI practices green energy management as an environmentally friendly company.

GHG Emissions Management and Disclosure of Information

  • Although the nature of insurance business does not require much use of energy and resources, SFMI voluntarily practices environment-friendly energy management through stringent control on green house gas (GHG) emissions and supervision on resource use.
  • Since its accession to Carbon Disclosure Project in 2010, SFMI has disclosed its carbon footprints including GHG emissions from all SFMI office buildings.
  • Every year, SFMI goes through a third-party verification on its GHG emissions, improving accuracy and reliability of environment-related information.

Energy Conservation & Efficiency Improvement

  • SFMI promotes efficient energy use by implementing various energy-saving measures such as flexible management of building facilities.
  • SFMI maintains a proper indoor temperature in summer and winter times when demand for energy surges for heating and cooling, and automatically controls and turns off lights in the office.
  • SFMI creates an environmentally friendly work environment through remodeling of old buildings into eco- friendly systems and placement of energy-efficient equipment.

Indirect GHG Emissions Reduction

SFMI recommends employees to refrain from using their own cars and use public transportation when commuting.

Investment Socially Responsible Investment

SFMI adopts social responsibility by integrating ESG criteria in our asset management. We carry out strict, negative screening practices when making investment decisions to avoid speculative investment and to make socially responsible investments.

In particular, we increased our investments in new renewable energy businesses such as photovoltaic, wind power, fuel batteries, and the environment for the purpose of water treatment and we aim to add up to KRW 10.5 trillion more of social responsibility investments based on contract amounts by 2030.

SFMI supports the ‘Renewable Energy 3020’ initiative by the government and cooperates with the GLCC(Global Loss Control Center), an intra-specialty group, to vitalize investment and loan activities in renewable energies. SFMI evaluates and analyzes natural disaster risks during construction and operation phases and periodically invites experts in solar and wind power energy to host seminars to help enhance the awareness of renewable energies.

Environment·Energy Management System

SFMI applies an environment and energy management system to all our operation locations and buildings. The company has also retained or renewed its ISO 14001(environment management system, from 2014) and ISO 50001(energy management system, from 2012).

Specific Activities

Specific Activities

Reduction of Paper Use SFMI is committed to reducing paper use by offering electronic terms and conditions and expanding mobile policy application, etc.
Use and Treatment of Water Resources SFMI have installed water treatment systems in all of our office buildings across the country. Used water is treated by sewage disposal plants, eliminating the dangers of toxic materials that may impact the surrounding environment.
Business Trips SFMI recommends the use of public transportation for its employees to reduce greenhouse gas emissions(Scope 3) generated during business trips. SFMI also encourages the use of multi-parity video and voice conferencing systems by electronic means to reduce unnecessary overseas trips.
Green Purchasing To promote purchases of eco–friendly products, in December 2006, Samsung established guidelines that place the purchase of environmentally–friendly products as a top priority. The guidelines mandate the purchase of Environment Mark Authorized and energy efficient products. We also encourage employees to purchase environmentally–friendly goods in their daily lives through education on environmental management.
Eco-Office Activities SFMI is staging various campaigns designed to raise employee awareness on environmental protection and promote environmentally friendly activities. SFMI employees have received multi-power strips as part of “Standby Power ZERO” campaign to switch off electronic devices all at once when they leave the office and participated in “Go Recycle” campaign to reduce waste by separating recyclable wastes and reducing disposable products. We also distributed “Nudge for Green” guidelines to help improve employee behavior and continued to promote the guidelines through various channels including company PC screen savers, elevator announcements and in-house television broadcasting, etc. Moreover, SFMI staged “Plastic Free” campaign to reduce plastic use at the company cafeteria.
